Through the EEA and Norway Grants, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway contribute to decreasing the social and economic disparities and strengthening bilateral relations between beneficiary countries in Europe. The three countries closely cooperate with the EU on the basis of the European Economic Area Agreement (EEA Agreement).
Between 2009 and 2014 the value of the EEA and Norway Grants amounted to EUR 1.79 billion. Norway ensures ca. 97% of the total subsidy. Poland is the largest beneficiary with the allocated grant of EUR 578.1 million. The grants are available for NGOs, research institutions and universities, the public and private sectors in 13 newest membership countries of the EU as well as Greece, Portugal and Spain. Within the scope of the above grants, the donor countries broadly cooperate with one another, and the undertakings can be implemented by 2016.
The key areas of support include environmental protection and climate change, research and scholarships, civil society, health protection, support for children, gender equality, justice and cultural heritage.
